PANDIT SHIVNATH MISHRA

Pandit Shivnath Mishra was born on the 12th October, 1943, in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). He is a musician of the prominent Banaras Gharana lineage of top class singers and instruments player, going back many generations, including his great grand father Pandit Bade Ramdas Mishra could see signs of a masterful musician in him. He began studying vocal music with his uncle - guru, Pandit Mahadev Prasad in five years age.

However, when he was eight years old his musical inclination led him to learn sitar.He also took sitar classes with Pandit Rajbhan Singh in Banaras. In a family of vocalists, he was the first to master the sitar. Due to the influence of his family, as well as the Benares Gharana tradition, he is among the few artists in contemporary India to employ a method of ‘Gayaki Ang’, which is characteristic of “Banarasi Ang ki Gayaki’ which is classical vocal genre that is highly ornamented and thus. Banaras is gayaki ang of Khayal, Dhrupad, Thumari, Tappa also famous for Chaiti, Hori, Kajari, and Dadra, these all Gayaki Ang Pandit Shivnath Mishra applied on Sitar instrumental music. In addition to Thumari, his lively, powerful, and unique style draws from the other major genres of Hindustani classical music found in Banaras . He has been praised with numerous titles and awards throughout his career, beginning in 1966, when, at the young age of twenty-three, he received a gold medal from the All India Music Conference, in Kolkatta. He is also an empaneled artist of I.C.C.R (Indian Council for Cultural Relations).

2. Performances with National and International Musicians

He has performed with many renowned tabla players such as Padma Vibhushan Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Padma Bhushan Pt. Samta Prasad, Pt. Nanhaku Maharaj, Pt. Lachhu Maharaj, Pt. Sharda Sahai, Padma Shri Pt. Suresh Talwarkar, Ustad Akram Khan, Ustad Faizal Qureshi, also performed Jugalbandi with sarod artist Ustad Ashish Khan. He has also performed with such international jazz artists as John Handy, Paul Horn, David Freezen, Ben Conrad, Charl Mariano,Gorge Figgler Aimester, among others. Moreover, he has participated in many conferences and recitals.

3. Head of the Music Department

As well as being one of India’s premier sitar artists, Pandit Shivnath Mishra served as the Head of the Music Department at the Sampurnanand Sanskrit University of Benares (Varanasi) for 36 years.

4. Promoting Indian Classical Music

In 1994, he formed the ensemble “Music of Benares”, comprised of a group of north Indian (Hindustani) classical musicians, whose aim was to familiarize audiences all over the world with Hindustani music in general.

Pandit Shivnath Mishra has recorded many LPs and CDs throughout his career, produced by such labels as T-series, Bihan Music (Kolkata), ASA Music (Mumbai), Soundings of the Planet (USA), SORF Music (Germany), etc.

7. Performed Internationally

1979 marked the beginning of his performances abroad. Since that time, he has kept a busy international tour schedule in such countries as Germany, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, and Israel. In 1999, he gave his first concerts in the USA and Canada.
