PANDIT SHIVNATH MISHRA
Pandit Shivnath Mishra was born on the 12th October, 1943, in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh). He is a musician of the prominent Banaras Gharana lineage of top class singers and instruments player, going back many generations, including his great grand father Pandit Bade Ramdas Mishra could see signs of a masterful musician in him. He began studying vocal music with his uncle - guru, Pandit Mahadev Prasad in five years age.
" He is listed as an ‘A’ grade artist in All India Radio/Television. He has taken part in programs broadcast by BBC Television, CBC (Canadian Radio), Rai Tre (Italian Television), RTL (European Television), BR (German Radio), as well as radio programs in Austria, and elsewhere. "
However, when he was eight years old his musical inclination led him to learn sitar.He also took sitar classes with Pandit Rajbhan Singh in Banaras. In a family of vocalists, he was the first to master the sitar. Due to the influence of his family, as well as the Benares Gharana tradition, he is among the few artists in contemporary India to employ a method of ‘Gayaki Ang’, which is characteristic of “Banarasi Ang ki Gayaki’ which is classical vocal genre that is highly ornamented and thus. Banaras is gayaki ang of Khayal, Dhrupad, Thumari, Tappa also famous for Chaiti, Hori, Kajari, and Dadra, these all Gayaki Ang Pandit Shivnath Mishra applied on Sitar instrumental music. In addition to Thumari, his lively, powerful, and unique style draws from the other major genres of Hindustani classical music found in Banaras . He has been praised with numerous titles and awards throughout his career, beginning in 1966, when, at the young age of twenty-three, he received a gold medal from the All India Music Conference, in Kolkatta. He is also an empaneled artist of I.C.C.R (Indian Council for Cultural Relations).
